Ben received his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Concordia University of Nebraska and his Master of Curriculum and Instruction from Western Governors University. He holds a Multiple Subject Credential for grades K–8. Since beginning his career teaching math and science at the elementary level, Ben has gone on to teach 6th grade math and science at Lashon Academy Charter Middle School in Van Nuys. As a tutor, Ben supports students from elementary through high school in math through AP Calculus and science through the high school level. In addition, he helps students in history, government, English and writing. As an educational specialist, Ben works with students one-on-one and regularly reads and interprets testing reports, conducts informal assessments, addresses remedial math, reading and writing needs, and communicates with parents and any therapists, educators and faculty that may be part of a student's support team. In particular, he provides remedial literacy support for younger students (K–6th grade), drawing on his Orton–Gillingham training. Ben is also an experienced Executive Functioning coach who helps students improve study skills, time management, organization, and planning. In his free time, he enjoys Star Wars, strategy games, watching movies, fishing, and keeping up with multiple sports.

  • What is one of your fundamental beliefs about education?


    I believe education should prepare students for their future success. I do my best to tie all my instruction to real world application and a student’s future success. In addition, I think it’s important to instill a love of learning in students.
  • What is your favorite subject to teach and why?


    I enjoy teaching math, science, and reading. These are all areas of interest for me and something I enjoy teaching. Math and reading have a huge impact on a students future success so it means a lot to me.
  • Share an anecdote about a time your student hit a wall and how the student overcame it.


    Math and reading intervention is always tricky when a student have built up resistance to learning a subject. The key is little steps and leveraging student interest.
  • What makes Hayutin different?


    They do a great job pairing educators and students. This relationship is important for student success.
  • What is the favorite thing you've learned from a student?


    I once had a student who had every capital and country memorized.
  • Other than education, what is something you are passionate about?


    I am really passionate about AV and IT work. I originally got my degree in computer science. I sometimes use these skills to support local nonprofits.
  • What’s something you learned about yourself after high school that you wish you knew back then?


    I need to keep a calendar to stay organized!
  • What is a stretch you experienced growing up?


    I was a big procrastinator in high school. I grew out of it in college.
  • If you could tutor any historical figure, who would it be and what would your focus be?


    I would tutor Albert Einstein. He was supposedly able to pick up topics in minutes as a student.
  • What’s the book on your nightstand you are dying to read?


    I have a few books from the Witcher series that I want to get through.
