We Asked, Jane Answered

  • What is one of your fundamental beliefs about education?

I believe education can be a magic carpet ride to a whole new world. A great book, a fascinating historical period, or delving into a scientific phenomenon or discovery can make education truly magical. The magic happens when something a student is learning about resonates with themselves -- and this is why I think it's so important to get to know students on a human level (their hobbies, their interests, their goals). When you know what makes a student interested, as an educator, you can better facilitate that magic carpet ride as soon as you see that carpet hovering just outside the window!
  • What is your favorite subject to teach and why?

I love teaching writing. Vocabulary, language on the level of the sentence, and how to structure a story are tools we use every day of our lives, but sometimes academic writing can feel far removed from everyday storytelling. I love supporting students in finding where storytelling and academic writing overlap -- and turning word choice and sentence structure into play.
  • Share an anecdote about a time your student hit a wall and how the student overcame it.

I had a young student who was having trouble elevating his vocabulary. He chose the same words over and over again -- and they were often vague words, or words lacking real pizzazz. So we incorporated the game of Mad Libs into our sessions, with the rule that he couldn't use the same word twice. Over two months, we saw big changes in his vocabulary! It was pretty spectacular (and fun!) to be a part of such a big improvement.
  • What makes Hayutin different?

No question -- the level of support! Both for students as well as for tutors. Hayutin administrators do such a wonderful job of making sure we are all getting what we need, answering our questions, and communicating with us every step of the way.
  • What is the favorite thing you've learned from a student?

As a bookworm, I am thrilled every time I get a great recommendation for a new book from one of my students! They've brought me to spy schools, on board pirate ships, into the world of unicorns, and beyond!
  • Other than education, what is something you are passionate about?

I love reading fiction, trying out new recipes, and the New York Yankees!
  • What’s something you learned about yourself after high school that you wish you knew back then?

In high school, I always described myself as a Humanities student. I think I told myself that, because science and math were harder for me, I didn't like those other subjects. I wish I'd been more comfortable feeling uncomfortable, and spent more time learning about science and math.
  • What is a stretch you experienced growing up?

I am a recovering perfectionist! It took me a really long time to live the maxim "the perfect is the enemy of the good." I am now much better at being comfortable with my end results -- as long as I know I tried my best, I can be proud of my work.
  • What’s the book on your nightstand you are dying to read?

I am dying to read the book "The King Killer Chronicles" -- it's been recommended to me by so many people and sounds very exciting.
