We Asked, Maggie Answered

  • What is one of your fundamental beliefs about education?

I believe that behavior is communication. When a child is avoiding work or lashing out, they are using the limited tools available to them to try and communicate something. It’s our job as educators to learn what they are trying to say and give them new, more advantageous tools. I approach my students with the same empathy and respect I would offer a colleague and work with them to find solutions and celebrate even the smallest successes.

  • What is your favorite subject to teach and why?

I love teaching English! My favorite thing in the world is when a student becomes so enthusiastic about a book that they start to argue with me about it. I love helping students discover books and stories that speak to their unique experience of the world as well as helping them empathize with new perspectives.

  • What makes Hayutin different?

I love how individualized Hayutin’s programs are. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to education. Directors, tutors, families, and other members of the child’s team work together to determine how to best meet their needs.
  • What is the favorite thing you've learned from a student?

I’ve learned so many things from my students, including patience, flexibility, and persistence. However, I have to say my favorite thing a student has taught me is that Pikachu appears on the legal tender currency in the country of Niue!

  • Other than education, what is something you are passionate about?

I’ve recently become passionate about rock climbing! I’ve never been particularly interested in sports and going to the gym has always been a miserable experience for me. However, these past few months I’ve had so much fun tackling newer and more challenging climbs and feeling myself get stronger!
  • What is a stretch you experienced growing up?

I have ADHD, so growing up it was always been a real challenge for me to sit still and focus in a classroom setting. This is absolutely something I still struggle with, but as an adult I’ve found ways to tap into my naturally low tolerance for boredom and use that to keep my classes fresh and exciting!
  • What’s the book on your nightstand you are dying to read?

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
