We Asked, Maggie Answered
What is one of your fundamental beliefs about education?
I meet students where they are at, honoring their current abilities, experiences, and challenges. By taking the time to understand each learner, I create a supportive space where growth feels achievable, and together we build skills, confidence, and independence at a pace that respects their individual journey. What is your favorite subject to teach and why?
I love teaching math because it is a subject where students often have to work harder to reach their ‘aha’ moments. When those moments do come, they feel especially meaningful—more so than in any other subject.Share an anecdote about a time your student hit a wall and how the student overcame it.
During my first year a s a substitute teacher, there was a student who could not get started on his assignment. I gave him gentle reminders but there was no budge. Eventually, I asked if I can sit by him to do the work together. He was hesitant but agreed and we were able to finish it together. Even though I had never met him before, he found the courage to trust this new adult to guide him through the assignment. After that day, he made it a point to always say "hello" or wave to me in the halls. Since then, I knew building rapport quickly and effectively was key.
What makes Hayutin different?
Knowing I have a support system behind me makes Hayutin different. I know that if I am stuck on what to do next with a student, I can reach out to my case manager to collaborate.Other than education, what is something you are passionate about?
I am passionate about music. I play guitar, ukulele, and piano.
What’s something you learned about yourself after high school that you wish you knew back then?
I learned that it is better to chunk my bigger assignments and work on them little by little every day.
What is a stretch you experienced growing up?
I struggled a lot with public speaking growing up and I still do. I make sure I prepare and not take anything too seriously.
What’s the book on your nightstand you are dying to read?
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
