We Asked, Shuo Answered

  • What is one of your fundamental beliefs about education?

I believe that learning is one of our major purposes in life. And my job as a teacher is to inspire a love of learning and fearless exploration of the world.
  • What is your favorite subject to teach and why?

I love teaching standardized tests (ISEE, ACT, SAT) because I think most students see them as something really scary and unconquerable. But in reality, these tests are fairly formulaic, the same year after year. And I think once I show students it is something they can conquer, a big weight is lifted off their shoulders and they aren't scared of the tests anymore. I love that moment when students change the way they look at the world -- to see what was previously impossible as possible.
  • Share an anecdote about a time your student hit a wall and how the student overcame it.

I had a student who had a lot of problems conceptualizing math word problems. It was when I started picking up actual objects and demonstrating the word problem to him that I realized that he actually wasn't able to visualize anything. But once he was able to feel the word problems in his hands, he understood them!
