We Asked, TATIANA Answered
What is one of your fundamental beliefs about education?
I believe education and learning should be fun and I try to incorporate creativity and individualism as much as possible. I love to incorporate individual interests into how I work with my students and allow them to have a say in what strategies works for them rather than struggle to learn any specific strategy. By inviting fun to be a part of the learning process, I hope to give confidence to my students and allow them to feel comfortable asking questions to receive help from others when needed. What is your favorite subject to teach and why?
I really enjoy teaching math because of how many methods there are to solve the same problem. Showing kids that there is not one correct way to do something is a great lesson for learning in general. Everyone understands things in different ways and even though the answer is the same, the journey to get there can vary.Share an anecdote about a time your student hit a wall and how the student overcame it.
I had a student really struggle with understanding place values and how numbers change when being multiplied by 10 versus when they are divided by 10. She knew the concept but kept making mistakes when working independently in classwork and tests. Using a creative approach, we drew some pictures and came up with a story to help her remember the amount of zeros needed for each one and she had her light bulb moment! What makes Hayutin different?
Hayutin is filled with such supportive and positive educators that really value teamwork. They have allowed me to be creative in my approaches with my students and have always provided support when it’s needed. I always feel at home in the office and whenever I visit. What is the favorite thing you've learned from a student?
A student once approached solving a multiplication problem in a way I have never seen and arrived at the correct answer. He explained his way of thinking to me afterwards and his understanding of the concept had allowed him to solve the problem in a way that made the most sense to him. I loved that he was able to tailor the concept to his way of thinking and come up with a new strategy!
Other than education, what is something you are passionate about?
I am passionate about learning new crafts and experiencing new cultures. I believe that making things by hand is one of the most rewarding things, besides that light bulb moment a student gets when they finally understand a concept, so I love to learn new crafts and creative outlets. My current favorites are film photography, crochet, and knitting. I also love to travel and see how other cultures express themselves creatively. This inspires me endlessly to create!
What’s something you learned about yourself after high school that you wish you knew back then?
I learned to embrace my interests and the things that made me different because it’s these things that make me who I am. Suppressing these things to fit in with others around me did not foster genuine friendships or connections until I learned to do this.
What is a stretch you experienced growing up?
Growing up, Math was difficult for me. I am more of a visual learner and it wasn’t until I started teaching and re-learning how to teach math with more diverse and visual strategies that it finally clicked! Now it is one of my favorite subjects to teach because of how many different strategies there are for understanding and problem solving. If you could tutor any historical figure, who would it be and what would your focus be?
I think instead of tutoring a historical figure I’d want to be tutored by a historical figure. I’d love to learn from a strong creative female historical figure like Frida Kahlo. She would tutor me in creative writing and our focus be magical realism with a bit of art mixed in as well. I am fascinated by creative minds and learning where they find their inspiration. What’s the book on your nightstand you are dying to read?
I have just started Daisy Jones & The Six and can’t wait to finish it so I can watch the show afterwards! I try my best to read books first whenever I can before watching any shows or movies based on books.
